About the position The Aquatic Toxicologist (Toxicologist 2) position within the Toxics Cleanup Program at the Department of Ecology focuses on managing and overseeing sediment and upland contaminated site cleanup. The role involves providing expert technical support on health protective standards, evaluating research related to toxicology, and ensuring compliance with state environmental regulations during various stages of cleanup processes. The position also includes participation in workgroups and training related to sediment cleanup policies. Responsibilities • Manage and oversee sediment and upland contaminated site cleanup. • Provide expert-level technical support on benthic and human health protective standards. • Evaluate research and technical information related to regulatory toxicology and environmental fate. • Ensure proper implementation of state environmental regulations during remedial investigations and cleanup processes. • Participate in workgroups regarding sediment policy development and implementation. • Lead training for TCP peers on sediment cleanup topics. • Direct and evaluate sediment toxicity assessments and research under the Sediment Management Standards. • Provide oversight assistance to site managers on environmental toxicology and risk assessment. • Represent the program as a technical expert in aquatic toxicology at public forums and interagency panels. • Review site chemical and biological sampling data to determine sediment characterization. Requirements • A total of nine years of experience and/or education in toxicology or related fields. • Experience as a Sediments Specialist implementing State Sediment Standards. • Experience conducting risk assessments and bioassays. • Education in Toxicology or a health/ecological-related science with a major emphasis in toxicology. • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Nice-to-haves • Expert knowledge of marine and freshwater sediment biology/ecology. • Expert knowledge of the Sediment Management Standards and Model Toxics Control Act. • Expert knowledge of federal environmental regulations including CERCLA. • Experience conducting human health and/or ecological risk assessments. • Strong verbal and written communication skills. • Project management and facilitation skills. • Strong negotiation and problem-solving skills.
