Hybrid Archivist for Metadata and Discovery (West Lafayette, IN, US)

- Purdue University Libraries and School of Information Studies seeks an Archivist for Metadata and Discovery. The successful candidate will join a cohort of experienced archivists within Purdue University Archives and Special Collections. This exciting opportunity will lead in the development of metadata policies informing discovery best practices across the entire unit. This is a five-year term position. In partnership with the Archivist for Flight and Space Exploration, the Archivist for Digital Preservation, and the Libraries Digital Programs, the Archivist for Metadata and Discovery will collaborate on a five-year project to digitize the Neil A. Armstrong papers and ensure the project goals are met within its time frame. The Armstrong papers contain over 200 cubic feet of personal papers of renowned astronaut and Purdue alumnus, Neil A. Armstrong, best known for his role in the Gemini and Apollo space programs as well as being the first person to step foot on the moon. The Archivist for Metadata and Discovery will collaborate with colleagues to establish and streamline digital collections metadata best practices and strategies, including establishing metadata policies, creation, long-term management, and online access standards. The archivist will prepare archival collections for digitization by creating robust metadata for use in collection descriptions (finding aids) and online digital collections. Through these actions the archivist will increase accessibility to important archival materials to be used in graduate and undergraduate instruction and international scholarly research. Other duties will include research assistance and researcher consultation. The salary range for this position is $53,800 - $60,500 commensurate with experience and education. What We Are Looking For : Education and Experience Qualified candidates will need: • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program in library, archival, or information science with successful completion of graduate coursework in archives • Minimum one (1) year of experience in a library, archives, or museum setting • Experience creating metadata content using standards such as EAD, Dublin Core, MODS, METS, PREMIS, or MARC • Experience and advanced knowledge of controlled vocabularies and/or thesauri, such as LCSH, AAT, etc. • Experience and knowledge working with copyright, open access, intellectual property, and fair use standards • Experience processing archival collections and creating archival description using DACS • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
